Pestilence, Pandemic & Plague Tour

A Lesson in Survival

Infectious outbreaks have plagued New Orleans for centuries, and if you’re a bit curious about the strange history of our city, you’ll want to look no further than our relationship with disease.

We’ll take you on a historic and strange tour of the squalid conditions of mass disease that New Orleans has encountered. As well, we’ll tell inspiring tales of coping with filthy and foul conditions.

Walk with us to uncover how epidemics such as Yellow Fever, Cholera, and more have infected our inhabitants and how our resilient city recovered. We’ll talk about odd medical practices of long ago, including how voodoo and religion played a part in trying to contain the “uncontainable.” Included in the tour is a walk through the French Quarter to see where it all went down.

Lewd Spirits Tour

Lewd Spirits Tour – New Orleans’ Most Unique Adults-Only Ghost Tour

Find debauchery on this tour about adultery, prostitutes, and twisted doctors! Along the way we combine spirits with spirits at 3 bars. This 21-and-over tour great for groups that want to experience the twisted side of NOLA. We took the most raunchy ghost stories, combined them with seedy haunted bars, and put them in a two-hour tour. Our first story starts at a location where spirits and spirits meet. Carry your drink along the streets to your next location and listening to one deprived story after another.

New Orleans is a very haunted city. With a history like ours, it’s hard not to be. From the cemeteries to the ancient buildings, a lot of history is packed into the heart of the city, making it one of the most haunted cities in America.

New Orleans has seen it all; from being a hub for the slave trade to being caught in the Yellow Fever Epidemic, where about 41,000 people lost their lives, this city has seen a fair share of disease and tragedy. It only makes sense that some of those spirits would stick around. Even many of our guides have had their own spooky experiences after giving tours for so many years.

New Orleans’ Famous Haunted Spots

Beyond the death surrounding this city since its start, there are also many famous haunted buildings in New Orleans. The most infamous, of course, being the LaLaurie Mansion. Many people know the tale of Madame LaLaurie thanks to many books, podcasts, and popular TV shows such as American Horror Story writing the tales of her life. However, if you don’t know about Madame LaLaurie, you’re in for a treat!
We also tell the tales of lesser-known haunted spots in the city and even touch on the world’s oldest profession: prostitution. Hear all this and more on our Lewd Spirits Tour.

New Orleans’ Original True Crime Tour

Sinister Criminal Intentions

Maybe ghost stories don’t quite pique your interest, but you have that curiosity about the dark side of humanity. Some of the most terrifying things are what people do to each other, and perhaps you want to glimpse into this corrupt corner of existence. We’ll bring you on a tour of the sordid details behind New Orleans’ dark bloody murders. You’ll visit locations in the French Quarter where the echoes of gruesome crimes of murder still cry out. Our city, while soulful and charming, has always had a seedy side from its beginnings. From being settled by the dregs of France—people offered to be released from poorhouses and prisons if they boarded ship for Louisiana—to the delinquency and depravity of today, where the unspeakable still happens.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND MUSEUM

African American History: Washington Civil Rights Landmarks and Museum of African American History (with transportation)

Imagine standing in the very spot where President Obama was sworn in! Or close your eyes and “hear” civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous “I have a Dream” speech in front of the august Lincoln Memorial. Look out and picture the sea of people—about 250,000— gathered at this March on Washington on August 28, 1963, in a peaceful protest for jobs and freedom. See these sights and more:  Stops on this half-day guided tour include: The Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, and the final stop (with reserved tickets) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Along the way, pass by Howard University and Mary McLeod Council House. Throughout the tour, your guide will share history and stories that celebrate the cultural contributions and civil rights milestones of African Americans in the United States.

At the Lincoln Memorial, learn about Dr. Robert Moton’s (censored) dedication speech at its opening in 1922. Hear stories about the famous 1939 Marion Anderson Concert. Learn about the March on Washington and MLK’s role. At the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, learn about how the Memorial was built, the fourteen quotes and statements featured on the Inscription Wall, the Mountain of Despair, and the Stone of Hope. Next, at the U.S. Capitol, stand where Obama took the oath of office, learn about how slaves from Jamestown helped build the Capitol and the White House, and learn how key Supreme Court decisions affected African American rights. Next, visit the African American Civil War Memorial & Museum. Here you will find out more about the 209,000 African American Civil War veterans and see a memorial, plaques, and the “Spirit of Freedom” statue dedicated to them in 1998. Along the tour, pass by the U Street neighborhood, once home to civil rights activist Frederick Douglass. Drive past the renowned Howard University, established in 1867. Prominent graduates include Thurgood Marshall, Elijah Cummings, Taraji Henson, and Toni Morrison. Go by the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, purchased by her in 1943 and featuring a design inspired by the second French Empire. At the close of our tour, enjoy same-day reserved tickets to explore on your own at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which closes at 5:30.

From Jazz to Civil Rights: Walk through Tremé’s African-American and Creole heritage

From Jazz to Civil Rights: Walk through Tremé’s African-American – Creole heritage.

Walking tour.

Explore the Tremé neighborhood on foot to learn the history of jazz, the civil rights movement and the communities past and present that shape this vibrant city. Your guided walking tour of Tremé,  the undisputed birthplace of New Orleans jazz and the center of the city’s Creole culture will take you to another world. Some of the best known jazz greats from New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood include Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Pete Fountain, Wynton and Ellis Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr, Kermit Ruffins, Danny Barker, Trombone Shorty, and Jeremy Davenport to name a few. Today, Tremé is still home to musicians as well as artists and craftsmen who contribute to the development of the ongoing neighborhood story. We will discuss the city’s modern brass band tradition. On a serious note, you will learn about this neighborhood’s key role in the rise of the civil rights movement. In fact, civil rights champions often gathered and dined inside the neighborhoods’ most famous historic restaurants!  We will then visit St. Augustine Church, the oldest African American Catholic Church, where you can visit The Tomb of the Unknown Slave.  On the lighter side, we will also see the only laundromat that made its way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Have fun spotting Tremé’s many famous movie and television scenes, notably the HBO’s popular 2010-1013 television series Treme, which took place in the neighborhood post-hurricane Katrina.  We conclude the tour with our return to the French Quarter. Hungry? Your tour guide will be glad to point you toward some of the area’s historic Creole and African restaurants.

It’s A Wonderful World: A Walk through New Orleans Musical History

It’s A Wonderful World: A Walk through New Orleans Musical History

Highlights: Louis Armstrong Square, Storyville. (2h30 afternoon tour)

Begin your appreciation of New Orleans’ rich musical history with a visit to Louis Armstrong Park, dedicated to this iconic jazz trumpeter and vocalist and the New Orleans jazz tradition. At the outskirts of the French Quarter, this park is a preeminent site of musical and cultural history. Inside, visit Congo Square, where African slaves of the past gathered to sing, dance and celebrate. Close your eyes and you can almost hear their drums beating. Next, travel down Basin Street to see the few remaining buildings of what was once the backside of Storyville, New Orleans’ official red light district from 1897-1917. This area, once lined with upscale musical saloons, was the birthplace or performance venue of several influential jazz musicians like Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and Pops Foster. In the heart of the French Quarter, pass by the Preservation Hall, founded in 1961.  Our musical tour ends at the site of the former French Opera House—where everyone from the City’s elite to its poorest immigrants and African-Americans once donned their finest to enjoy a shared love of Opera. Whatever became of this beloved icon?  Find out through a commemorative lounge display at the end of your tour.

Discover Cajun Country: Includes Scenic Hydrofoil Swamp tour, Two Plantation tours–and why not try a rum tasting!

Discover Cajun Country: Includes Scenic Hydrofoil Swamp tour, Two Plantation tours–and why not try a rum tasting!

Nine hours door-to-door by bus, which will pick you up at the front door of your hotel in New Orleans.

Ready for a MAD adventure? Start by touring the swamps of South Louisiana in a novel way–by hydrofoil. With a total capacity of 4-8 people, these versatile boats offer an intimate tour.  Let our experienced captain entertain you with his wild swamp stories as he steers the agile hydrofoil into tiny canals, deep in the most secluded areas of the swamps. You’ll get a close up look at the bayou’s mesmerizing fauna and flora. Be on the lookout for the bayou’s native birds, turtles, and alligators. Feeling brave? You may even get a chance to hold a baby alligator! Next you will travel along River Road to Laura Plantation. At this 19th century French-Creole plantation you will learn about the lives of both the white and black Creole families who resided there. In addition to the “big house,” Laura has preserved several of the once-prolific original slave cabins, which are now incredibly rare. See some of the exceptional work of the West African slaves who once lived there. Are you a childhood fan of Br’er Rabbit stories? You may be surprised to learn that American scholar Alcée Fortier, a noted Louisiana historian and folklorist, first recorded these in the 1870s from the West African stories of Compair Rabbit. We’ll end the day at Whitney Plantation, the only Louisiana museum that focuses exclusively on the lives of enslaved people. At this former indigo, rice and sugar plantation, the slaves who worked the fields were among the key suppliers of food to New Orleans during the period of French rule. How harsh was slave life? You can imagine this difficult past through the museum’s exhibits, visiting the slave cabins, hearing roving staff lectures, and by downloading a phone app for a self-guided tour. We will then return to your hotel after this day full of history.
