Architectural River Cruise and Guided Walking tour of Chicago

Architecture River Cruise and Walking Tour with a tour guide
(½ day tour)

Born of the Great Fire, Chicago’s booming steel industry, and an indomitable spirit, skyscrapers were invented here in 1885… and we have the best way to see them. Join us for 90 minutes of genuinely tall tales and head-turning sights from the breathtaking vantage point of our cruise deck. Our tour, aboard the Chicago Architectural Cruise, departs from Navy Pier. It then travels down the main branch of the Chicago River, up the north branch to the East Bank Club, and then south past Willis Tower formerly Sears Tower to the old Post Office Building. The cruise is led by a knowledgeable architecture professional who will provide detailed descriptions of more than forty buildings seen on the river cruise. You will see a variety of architectural styles—including art deco, neo-Gothic, Chicago-school style, Mid-Century Modern, and more! After this, we will continue with a walking tour to see the amazing skyscrapers from the ground, while strolling leisurely through Chicago.

Discover Chicago & the Skydeck

Discover Chicago & Soar Above the City—Visit the Willis Tower Skydeck (4 hours, Offered from April to the end of September/mid-October).

This walking tour will introduce you to the city of Chicago and take you to the highest heights: The 103rd floor Skydeck of the Willis formerly Sears tower. The tour guide will share a brief overview of Chicago’s place in time: its storied past, current challenges, and future aspirations. Pass key city sights as you walk to the entrance of this breathtaking tower. Originally built as the headquarters for Sears, Roebuck & Co., Willis tower is the second tallest building in North America. In fact, it was the tallest building in world until the Petras Towers overtook its record in 1996! Enjoy a 60-second ride in a glass elevator–the spectacular views will surely offset the adrenaline-pumping climb. Designed entirely with glass windows, the tower offers the most breathtaking view of Chicago. Bring your compass and take a deep breath; you will hardly be able to take it all in. From fantastic skyscrapers to the sparkling lake Michigan, sprawling green parks, and iconic landmarks—in every direction, Chicago’s skyline will captivate you. Ready for a dare? Gangsters and the prohibition era

On the Road to Gangsters, Speakeasies, and Prohibition (3 hours, offered year-round)

Picture yourself getting out of a shiny black Cadillac, wearing a three-piece suit, and a Borsalino tilted on your head, with a Cuban cigar in your mouth! In this Chicago gangster tour, reimagine yourself as the infamous Al Capone. While Chicago officials have tried to erase its gangster past—hidden underground tunnels, countless speakeasies, and gangster hotspots—remnants of this roaring era remain. The Green Mill Lounge, once part-owned by Capone’s underling, “Machine Gun” Jack McGurn, is one of these gems. See Al Capone’s favorite booth (with windows on both sides so he could look over his shoulder!), the Prohibition era “trap door” bar entrance, and the ornate art deco bar. In the Blackstone hotel, “Lucky” Luciano hosted a gangster’s convention in 1931. Did they wear nametags? Re-imagine key Prohibition events of the 20s and 30s. In the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, which took place February 14, 1929, gunfire broke out between Capone’s gangsters and those of Irish rival, George “Bugs” Moran. Seven of Moran’s group were shot. Everyone assumed by Capone, who again got away with murder. The prize? Full control of the City’s lucrative gambling, bootlegging and prostitution business. No surprise that Capone was worth an estimated $60 million. For the next 3 hours stay vigilant; a gangster needs to constantly look over his shoulder!

Chinatown & North Beach Walking Tour with Lunch

Chinatown, North Beach and Little Italy Walking Tour

Walk through both San Francisco’s Chinatown and nearby Little Italy neighborhood, known as North Beach. Learn why San Francisco came to have a Chinatown and how the 1906 Earthquake affected immigration trends. Chinatown’s bustling 24 blocks (the oldest in the city!) include traditional shops, tantalizing restaurants, delicious foods such as Dim Sum and Chop Suey, ornate lamp posts, and Pagoda-style architecture. See an open air food market, pass the Great Star Theater, Canton Flower shop, and more of the area’s exotic shops.  Rest assured you will have plenty of time to shop!  Visit a Chinese pharmacy to learn about traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Hear Chinese ghost stories. Did you know the fortune cookie was invented right here in San Francisco? Learn about Chinese-American ingenuity in the world famous Fortune Cookie Factory. After Chinatown, walk next door to San Francisco’s North Beach, known as little Italy. After the 1906 earthquake, this neighborhood experienced an influx of Northern Italian immigrants. Italian architecture and cuisine still shapes the neighborhood.  Visit “The Italian Cathedral of the West”, St. Peter’s And Paul’s Church (when available). This cathedral has proudly reflected the neighborhood’s Italian roots since it was built in 1884.  Nearby, find the heart of the neighborhood, Washington Square Park. Learn about Lillian Hitchcock Coit and the history of Coit Tower. The Tower offers stunning views of San Francisco and murals made by the 1930’s Works Progress Administration artists. You may be surprised to find that Little Italy was home to many poets and writers of the Beatnik generation. These include Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and more. Stop in at their former stomping grounds: City Lights Bookstore. This famous bookseller of world literature and progressive works narrowly escaped closure in 2020. Finish up with an authentic Italian lunch in North Beach.

North Beach and Little Italy Walking Tour

North Beach and Little Italy Walking Tour

North Beach isn’t a beach at all–it’s San Francisco’s Little Italy! It was an actual beach until it was filled in by landfill in the 19th century.  Walk through this eclectic neighborhood and learn its fascinating history. After the 1906 earthquake, this neighborhood attracted an influx of Northern Italian immigrants. Though the neighborhood today is a mix of several ethnic groups,  it still retains its Italian character in its buildings, restaurants and bakeries. Its famous inhabitants included baseball star Joe DiMaggio, who grew up here, and his wife Marilyn Monroe, who lived here briefly. It was also home to San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto. Visit “The Italian Cathedral of the West”, St. Peter’s And Paul’s Church (when available). This cathedral has proudly reflected the neighborhood’s Italian roots since it was built in 1884 (and rebuilt after the 1906 fire).  Nearby, find the heart of the neighborhood, Washington Square Park.  Learn about Lillian Hitchcock Coit and the history of Coit Tower. Time for a climb? The Tower offers stunning views of San Francisco and murals made by the 1930’s Works Progress Administration artists. Surely you’ve heard of the Beatnik generation?  Well, Little Italy was home to many of the movement’s famous poets and writers–including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and many more. Consider yourself lucky to stop in at their former stomping grounds: City Lights Bookstore. This famous bookseller of world literature and progressive works narrowly escaped closure in 2020. Before you end your tour, pass by some of the most famous North Beach restaurants so you’ll know where to eat later! Highlights: Original Joe’s, Tony’s Pizza, and Golden Boy, home of the Deep Dish Clam Garlic Pizza, a local favorite.

Street Art Tour: a Walk through The Mission

Street Art Tour: a Walk through The Mission

Feeling spontaneous? You never know what fun surprises are in store as you walk through San Francisco’s least visited and most spirited neighborhood: The Mission. Founded in 1776, this vibrant artistic neighborhood blends Latino culture and food with hip new restaurants, shops and galleries.  See its namesake “Mission Dolores”, the oldest intact building in San Francisco, where you can visit a rose garden and find the resting spots for famous city leaders. The mission anchors famous Dolores Park. The park has panoramic City skyline views, and wide green lawns.  Browse the Missions’ ever-changing street art, pop into galleries and take more photographs in front of famous Murals. A don’t miss: The Woman’s Mural in Balmy Alley.  Your tour guide will tell you about the history of the neighborhood, how murals are assigned a spot, and about the current effort to keep this authentic neighborhood alive.  After all this action, you will surely be famished. Experience the taste of an authentic taco or famous Mission-style burrito–that is if you can choose one of the three varieties. If it’s open, visit Precita Eyes, the Mural Arts and Visitor Center. Craving a sweet treat? Learn how the neighborhood’s famous donuts are created and taste some of the world’s most unique flavored donuts—Maple Glazed Apple Bacon?  Zucchini Oat?  Blueberry dipped? (Flavors vary depending on the shop.) Tour ends in the Valencia St. neighborhood at Dandelion Chocolate, a small “bean to bar” chocolate factory.

Travel to the top of Nob Hill, originally home to the mansions of the “big four” U.S. railroad barons, and still a place of wealth and magnificent homes. A don’t miss: gothic-style Grace Cathedral Episcopal Church. You will be awed by the detailed replica of Florence’s famous Ghiberti Doors of Paradise!  Continue on to Alamo Square to see the world-famous Painted Ladies.  Learn about the gorgeous Victorian homes and their connection to California’s famous Redwoods. These Queen Anne-style Victorians, known for their eye-catching bright colors and asymmetrical style, are privately-owned. These “Seven Sisters” have been featured frequently in movies and television shows, including Full House and Charmed. Finally, visit the Palace of Fine Arts, the last remaining structure from the 1915 World’s Fair. Depending on time, this tour may possibly include a picture-taking stop at a Fort Point location under the Golden Gate Bridge before returning to the Ferry Building, where the tour ends in either case.
