The Big Easy: African-American Art and Culture & the Origin of New Orleans

The Big Easy: African-American Art and Culture & the Origin of New Orleans

Highlights: French Quarter, Saint Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, tour of BE Studios and JAMNOLA experiential art exhibit. (Walking tour and 2 hours by sedan, 4h30)

Start your walking adventure in the historic French quarter. After an overview of New Orleans’ history, your guide will spend the first two hours leading you on foot through the heart of the City. You will visit the places that made New Orleans famous, such as St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. See the mighty Mississippi River, inspiration for American author Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn.” Enjoy the sights and sounds of bustling Bourbon Street. Take a detour on a quaint alleyway lined with colorful 18th century homes or duck into a tranquil courtyard. Learn about fascinating African-American and Creole cultural contributions and stories. Be entertained by anecdotes about the zany characters that are emblematic of this exciting city. Next, explore lesser-known treasures like the French Market—a 300 year old convent with hidden courtyards. Head to Studio BE, home to local artist Brandan “Bmike” Odums’ first solo project. Odums, along with 40 other artists, collaborated to create large murals and exhibits, which uphold a commitment to activism, resistance to injustice, and tribute to black American history. The visual art housed in this 10,000-square-foot warehouse tells the stories of revolutionaries, heroes and everyday New Orleanians who speak out against racial injustice visually. These moving works will likely renew your sense of compassion, love and understanding. Our last stop is JAMNOLA, which stands for “Joy, Art, and Music–New Orleans, Louisiana.” The city’s first experiential pop-up museum takes audiences of all ages on an ephemeral art tour of the city’s iconic cultural gems. Twelve exhibits by 20 local artists entice visitors to experience famous New Orleans art, music, food and theater in a novel way— sure to leave a lingering impression. When the tour ends, your experienced guide will suggest further opportunities to explore the sights, tastes, and adventures of the Big Easy.

Discover Cajun Country: Includes Scenic Hydrofoil Swamp tour, Two Plantation tours–and why not try a rum tasting!

Discover Cajun Country: Includes Scenic Hydrofoil Swamp tour, Two Plantation tours–and why not try a rum tasting!

Nine hours door-to-door by bus, which will pick you up at the front door of your hotel in New Orleans.

Ready for a MAD adventure? Start by touring the swamps of South Louisiana in a novel way–by hydrofoil. With a total capacity of 4-8 people, these versatile boats offer an intimate tour.  Let our experienced captain entertain you with his wild swamp stories as he steers the agile hydrofoil into tiny canals, deep in the most secluded areas of the swamps. You’ll get a close up look at the bayou’s mesmerizing fauna and flora. Be on the lookout for the bayou’s native birds, turtles, and alligators. Feeling brave? You may even get a chance to hold a baby alligator! Next you will travel along River Road to Laura Plantation. At this 19th century French-Creole plantation you will learn about the lives of both the white and black Creole families who resided there. In addition to the “big house,” Laura has preserved several of the once-prolific original slave cabins, which are now incredibly rare. See some of the exceptional work of the West African slaves who once lived there. Are you a childhood fan of Br’er Rabbit stories? You may be surprised to learn that American scholar Alcée Fortier, a noted Louisiana historian and folklorist, first recorded these in the 1870s from the West African stories of Compair Rabbit. We’ll end the day at Whitney Plantation, the only Louisiana museum that focuses exclusively on the lives of enslaved people. At this former indigo, rice and sugar plantation, the slaves who worked the fields were among the key suppliers of food to New Orleans during the period of French rule. How harsh was slave life? You can imagine this difficult past through the museum’s exhibits, visiting the slave cabins, hearing roving staff lectures, and by downloading a phone app for a self-guided tour. We will then return to your hotel after this day full of history.

Famous Chicago Pizza tour: A Foodie Adventure with Sample Slices!

Nowhere is Deep Dish Pizza so iconic as in Chicago. Chicago-style pizza is prepared according to several assorted styles developed expressly in Chicago. The most iconic is at Chicago Uno Grill, formerly Pizzeria Uno, the oft-acknowledged inventor of the original Deep- Dish style, featuring a thick crust and upside-down base with an olive oil foundation. Though the specific inventors from Pizzeria Uno are disputed; (Accounts vary; was it Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo, the 1943 founders of Pizzeria Uno? Or was it one of their employees, pizza-great Rudy Malnati Sr.?)  Mysteries aside, Deep Dish has spread out over Chicago with many variations, including a slightly thinner butter crust alternative. Vote on your favorite! As we pursue our daytime guided pizza tour, we will see Chicago like a local, visiting four pizzerias in off-the-beaten path restaurants (best to skip the lengthy Uno line!), and sample more than four slices of local Chicago pizza variations! Learn the history, ingredients, and physics of how these creative, top-notch pizzas are prepared. Along the way, as we enjoy our walk through the legacy of Chicago pizza, we will explore the history of local Chicago neighborhoods.

Chicago has the Blues!

Enjoy the Chicago Blues…. Jazz, Rock, and Beyond

Enjoy the best music the Windy City has to offer! In the Second City, stroll through the streets of Chicago following in the footsteps of the greatest jazz and blues musicians. During the “Great Migration” of the early 1900s, poor Black workers fled the South for great Northern cities, including Chicago. Fleeing the overt racism of the South, they sought the reliable jobs of the meatpacking, railroad, and steel industries of Chicago. But they did not come empty-handed; these workers brought cultural gifts, including the lively musical tradition of blues and Dixieland jazz. Through the creative process, Chicago Jazz emerged and evolved along a similar timeline as Chicago Blues in the early to mid-twentieth century. Chicago jazz featured more elaborate introductions, greater emphasis on solos, and more intense pacing. It also dropped the tuba and banjo, and added string bass, saxophone, and guitar. Chicago jazz greats included Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman and more. Blues greats included Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Howlin’ Wolf, among others. These artists inspired a new generation of music; modern rock, pop, alternative music and more all have roots in Chicago Jazz, blues, and soul! As you walk through Lincoln Park, learn about its music history, and check out music hot spots including Kingston Mine, the oldest blues club, B.L.U.E.S, for old school Blues music, Wild Hare & Singing Armadillo to catch a Caribbean beat, and Lincoln Hall. Pass by local attractions such as the home of Muddy Waters, Chicago House of Blues, the Green Mill, one of the city’s oldest and most famous jazz clubs, and countless other jazz clubs and restaurants. Afterwards, head to the city’s most famous venue, Andy’s Jazz Club & Restaurant, where you can dine if you want a bit more of fun while enjoying a blues and jazz concert.

ARCHITECTURAL VISIT OF THE LOOP WITH AN ARCHITECT

From Skyscrapers to Cultural Centers: Walk the Chicago Loop with an Architect (4 hours)

Highlights: The Railway Exchange and The Reliance Building, both by architects from D.H. Burnham & Co., the Chicago Cultural Center by architectural firm Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge, The Sullivan Center by Louis H. Sullivan, and more.

See the skyscrapers of the Chicago “Loop” with a knowledgeable architect as your tour guide! The “Loop,” delineated by Chicago River to the North, Michigan Lake on the East, and Roosevelt Rd. to the South, is known as Chicago’s Financial District. After Manhattan in New York, this area ranks second in national commercial and business importance. We will pass by key historic and modern skyscrapers, among other noteworthy buildings. You will see the Auditorium Building of Roosevelt University and the Auditorium Theater, built in 1889 to make culture available to the masses. Go through the Beaux Arts Railway Exchange, designed by Frederick P. Dinkelberg of D.H. Burnham & Co., the Reliance Building, by John Wellborn Root and later C.B. Atwood, also of D.H. Burnham & Co. Hear the crazy story of how its building began—with its original tenants still living inside the building! See Tiffany’s largest stained-glass dome at the Chicago Cultural Center by the firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge. We will stop by The Sullivan formerly the Carson, Pirie, Schott & Co. Store by Louis H. Sullivan and the Chicago Federal Center by Mies van der Rohe. We will not skip the Monadnock Building:  the tallest load-bearing brick building and The Rookery, both by J. Root, and the Chicago Building by Holabird & Roche. Finally, let us not forget the towering Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. This soaring skyscraper—the second tallest in North America—was the tallest building in world until the Petras Towers overtook its record in 1996. Are you a thrill seeker? OAK PARK & FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT ARCHITECTURAL TOUR

“Greatest American Architect”: In the Footsteps of Frank Lloyd Wright in Oak Park (4 hours)

Let our tour guide and architect lead you beyond Chicago’s great glass and steel skyscrapers, through the hidden gem of suburban Oak Park, Illinois. Frank Lloyd Wright, named the “Greatest American Architect” by The American Institute of Architecture in 1991, built his famous “Prairie Houses” here —not to mention his own home. Wright moved to Oak Park in 1881 and resided here for the first 20 years of his career—as a result many of Wright’s works are concentrated in this area. We will begin our tour with a guided visit to the Interior Home and Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright, today a museum. Find out the key elements of Wright’s designs, including creating buildings that harmonize with the natural environment. Did you know that a childhood set of building blocks inspired the expert architect? Find out how. We will also get a close-up view of the private house of Arthur Heurtley, one of Wright’s first Prairie-style homes. Complete our walk-through Oak Park with a guided tour to Wright’s Unity Temple, one of the favorite works of the architect. Wright put his heart and soul into the design of his home Unitarian church, calling it one of his most important designs and a “completely new architecture.”
