AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND MUSEUM

African American History: Washington Civil Rights Landmarks and Museum of African American History (with transportation)
Imagine standing in the very spot where President Obama was sworn in! Or close your eyes and “hear” civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous “I have a Dream” speech in front of the august Lincoln Memorial. Look out and picture the sea of people—about 250,000— gathered at this March on Washington on August 28, 1963, in a peaceful protest for jobs and freedom. See these sights and more: Stops on this half-day guided tour include: The Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, and the final stop (with reserved tickets) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Along the way, pass by Howard University and Mary McLeod Council House. Throughout the tour, your guide will share history and stories that celebrate the cultural contributions and civil rights milestones of African Americans in the United States.
At the Lincoln Memorial, learn about Dr. Robert Moton’s (censored) dedication speech at its opening in 1922. Hear stories about the famous 1939 Marion Anderson Concert. Learn about the March on Washington and MLK’s role. At the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, learn about how the Memorial was built, the fourteen quotes and statements featured on the Inscription Wall, the Mountain of Despair, and the Stone of Hope. Next, at the U.S. Capitol, stand where Obama took the oath of office, learn about how slaves from Jamestown helped build the Capitol and the White House, and learn how key Supreme Court decisions affected African American rights. Next, visit the African American Civil War Memorial & Museum. Here you will find out more about the 209,000 African American Civil War veterans and see a memorial, plaques, and the “Spirit of Freedom” statue dedicated to them in 1998. Along the tour, pass by the U Street neighborhood, once home to civil rights activist Frederick Douglass. Drive past the renowned Howard University, established in 1867. Prominent graduates include Thurgood Marshall, Elijah Cummings, Taraji Henson, and Toni Morrison. Go by the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, purchased by her in 1943 and featuring a design inspired by the second French Empire. At the close of our tour, enjoy same-day reserved tickets to explore on your own at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which closes at 5:30.
