Lower East Side e Essex Market

Manhattan’s Lower East Side (LES) has a reputation for being ahead of the curve. Feisty and vibrant, the LES takes the nickname “the city that never sleeps” as a challenge—and its music venues, bars and restaurants never fail to live up to it. The neighborhood retains its Jewish heritage with the LES Tenement Museum on Orchard Street, old-world fabric stores, and traditional delis like Katz’s where the famous scene from the movie “When Harry Met Sally” was shot.

Foodies will delight in a visit to the Essex Market. It has been a staple of the LES since 1818, when it began as a covered market on Grand Street between Essex and Ludlow streets. For over 200 years, locals and visitors have gathered to buy goods from vendors hawking meat, fish, cheese, produce and other specialty foods. The Essex Market vendors all have colorful stories and distinctive personalities that add flavor to their delicious offerings. They give a true neighborhood feel to this historic public market.
