North Beach isn’t a beach at all–it’s San Francisco’s Little Italy! It was an actual beach until it was filled in by landfill in the 19th century. Walk through this eclectic neighborhood and learn its fascinating history. After the 1906 earthquake, this neighborhood attracted an influx of Northern Italian immigrants. Though the neighborhood today is a mix of several ethnic groups, it still retains its Italian character in its buildings, restaurants and bakeries. Its famous inhabitants included baseball star Joe DiMaggio, who grew up here, and his wife Marilyn Monroe, who lived here briefly. It was also home to San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto. Visit “The Italian Cathedral of the West”, St. Peter’s And Paul’s Church (when available). This cathedral has proudly reflected the neighborhood’s Italian roots since it was built in 1884 (and rebuilt after the 1906 fire). Nearby, find the heart of the neighborhood, Washington Square Park. Learn about Lillian Hitchcock Coit and the history of Coit Tower. Time for a climb? The Tower offers stunning views of San Francisco and murals made by the 1930’s Works Progress Administration artists. Surely you’ve heard of the Beatnik generation? Well, Little Italy was home to many of the movement’s famous poets and writers–including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and many more. Consider yourself lucky to stop in at their former stomping grounds: City Lights Bookstore. This famous bookseller of world literature and progressive works narrowly escaped closure in 2020. Before you end your tour, pass by some of the most famous North Beach restaurants so you’ll know where to eat later! Highlights: Original Joe’s, Tony’s Pizza, and Golden Boy, home of the Deep Dish Clam Garlic Pizza, a local favorite.

Guide: Our licensed guides reserve the right to cancel the scheduled tour due to weather conditions (rain, storm, snow or other). In case of cancellation, we can offer you an alternative date or a total cancellation, in which case we will give you a full refund.
Cancellation Policy Private Tour: If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your tour, a 50% refund will be given. If you cancel less than 7 days prior to your tour, no refund will be given.
Cancellation Policy Group Tour: If you cancel more than 3 days prior to your tour, a 50% refund will be given. If you cancel less than 3 days before the day of your tour, no refund will be given.
Videos and pictures: We reserve the right to record video footage and photography in connection with future promotional and publicity for MAD Tours and Events on social media and website.
Belongings: Mad Tours and Events is not responsible for any personal items which are lost, stolen or left behind.
Passenger Voucher check-in Instructions: On the day of tour or activity, please arrive 15 minutes early to the tour departure point at the indicated address sent with your confirmation.
Pet: As much as we love them, they are not allowed.
Taxes & Booking fees: They are not included in the rate. Those fees will be indicated once you start the booking reservation process.
Request to reschedule your tour: All requests to reschedule your tour must be made in writing and sent to us via email more than 72 hours prior to your tour or activity. There are no exceptions. Without an email, we will not be able to reschedule your tour.
Please note that if you do not show up on the day of your tour or activity, your tour is forfeited.
