BOXING INITIATION IN BROOKLYN WITH A WORLD CHAMPION AND DISCOVERY OF DUMBO

Did you know that New York played a key role in defining the sport of boxing? Both real-life and fictional boxing heroes have pierced the big screen with their devastating fists. Think of Rocky or Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull. Or powerhouses like Muhammad Ali, Marcel Cerdan, Riddick Bowe, Junior Jones and Mike Tyson, who trained for endless days in the city’s most emblematic boxing hall in Brooklyn. We’ll take you to this illustrious den of champions. You’ll don shorts, an undershirt, and boxing gloves before jumping into the ring with a world champion to be introduced to the basics of fighting in an hour-long workout. If you’re lucky, you might even meet a regular here, the professional trainer who prepared Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank for her memorable role alongside Clint Eastwood in “Million Dollar Baby”!

This sporty activity is suitable for everyone, regardless of physical condition. You’re sure to come away with some fantastic stories! Before we start boxing, we’ll show you around Brooklyn and DUMBO (short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) for 45 minutes to an hour, where you can glimpse the most spectacular view of Manhattan!

Culinary tour in Washington Heights

Take one of our most popular tours to discover one of Manhattan’s Latino hub on the far north side of Manhattan, including the neighborhoods of Inwood and Washington Heights by discovering the tasty food our neighborhood has to offer.

We will take you to the various locations while strolling down our streets and sampling some of the neighborhood’s delish Dominican, Mexican or Cuban specialties, you will discover the cuisine influences with pastelitos and more.

Between historic architecture, amazing views with a gorgeous park that’s a fusion of natural and highly landscaped terrain nestled amid tranquil wooded slope, this area has his feet etched in the past with battles, castles and the first complex built for the middle class in a lush garden and views on the New Jersey Palisade. You will discover a very rich area little known to tourists!

Small businesses flourish in this area, we will pass by the numerous hairdressers, restaurants, juice carts and street vendors, and the very important bodegas. If you visit in the afternoon, you can stay and party in the many bars and restaurants at the famous Dyckman street, beware you might be dancing merengue or bachata!

We’ll explore this colorful ethnic neighborhood that’s off the beaten path! It transports you to another world with its vivacious people, lively music, and multicultural restaurants, interesting subway tunnels filled with graffiti. This is also the story of immigrants, Germans, Jewish, Polish, and Dominicans! You will discover what a community feels like full of joy.

If you have time and did not watch the movie yet < In the Heights >, we recommend you do so before this tour :-).

Discover Coney Island

When we think about Coney Island, we flashback to the movies from a nostalgic area. But most of all we see summertime, the Doggers, the beach, the fun, the amusement park with the cyclone, Hotdogs, and the famous hot dog competition or the Mermaid parade! There is so much to do and to see or just sear and soak up the sun.

MAD Tours and Events will take you on an exploration of this iconic place, to visit all sites we saw in movies and stretching a bit to Brighton Beach which used to be called the “Little Odessa”. This area is a little less visited but it is interesting to see the diversity of people from Russia living in this neighborhood.

The African American Experience

The truth is that New York was able to grow and benefit thanks to slave labor. This tour starts at the southern tip of Manhattan Island which was a hub during the era of Dutch rule. Discover how life changed dramatically for African Americans under British rule in the 19th century. Learn about free blacks and the history of slavery in New York.

This tour starts at Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans began to build the city’s infrastructure. Bowling Green is New York City’s oldest park. According to tradition, this spot served as the council ground for Native American tribes and was the site of the legendary sale of Manhattan to Peter Minuit in 1626.  The Dutch called the area “the Plain” and used it for several purposes including a parade ground, meeting place and, sadly, a slave market.

From there, we’ll continue to Federal Hall, a site next to a famous oyster house from 1825 that was owned and operated by free Africans. Find out why certain founding fathers who fought for freedom for all, such as Alexander Hamilton, turned a blind eye to the fact that their relatives were slaveowners. A tour of the African Cemetery serves as a stunning, heartbreaking and powerful tribute to the African and African American community. Meet the heroes of the Underground Railroad who risked their lives to help runaway slaves. This is a historic tour you won’t soon forget.

Lower Manhattan Architectural Tour

New York has two main concentrations of high-rise buildings: Midtown Manhattan and Lower Manhattan, each with its own uniquely recognizable skyline.  Lower Manhattan is one of the largest business districts in the United States and was characterized by the omnipresence of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center from its completion in 1973 until its destruction during the attacks of September 11, 2001. In the first decade of the 21st century, Lower Manhattan saw rapid reconstruction to include the construction of the incredible One World Trade Center—the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the seventh-tallest in the world. The Downtown skyline received new designs from such renowned architects as Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry. In our walk from the new WTC 7 to Battery Park, we’ll walk along Wall Street and see the Beekman by Frank Gehry, a refined high-rise hotel built in 1928. Finally, we’ll stroll through Little Italy to see the Thor building by Marcel Wanders, the new Mercer residences by Jean Nouvel, the Store for Art and Architecture by Steven Holl, the new Museum by SANAA and the new Prada store by OMA.
