MONUMENTS ON THE MOVE: BIKE TOUR

Monuments on the Move: Bike Tour of D.C.

What is the best way to see the monuments of Washington, D.C. at your own leisure? On your own set of wheels. This custom bike tour, led by an expert cyclist and seasoned tour guide, meets your specific needs—whether you are single, a couple, or a family.  Adult-only guests may prefer to cover more terrain, linger to read inscriptions at specific sites, or make certain stops that would not appeal to children. Begin your trip at your selected departure time near the National Mall. Your guide will fit you for a hybrid comfort or classic bike. Begin your journey at a comfortable pace, following D.C.’s safe dedicated bike lanes along easy-to-navigate flat surfaces. Stop along the way to hear interesting facts about the historic landmarks you will pass. See the Washington Monument, a towering 555-foot stone obelisk honoring the first U.S. President, George Washington. View the imposing neo-classical Lincoln Memorial and stop to read awe-inspiring quotes at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Ponder the tragedy of the lives lost in Vietnam at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, featuring more than 58,000 names of the people who served in that conflict. At the elliptical World War II Memorial, stone architecture and bronze sculptures honor the lives lost abroad and sacrifices made on the home front. See the stunning symmetry and quotes from Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. This moving tribute to the “The Greatest Generation” designed by Friedrich St. Florian, former chief of the Rhode Island School of Design. Your tour concludes at your original starting point.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND MUSEUM

African American History: Washington Civil Rights Landmarks and Museum of African American History (with transportation)

Imagine standing in the very spot where President Obama was sworn in! Or close your eyes and “hear” civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous “I have a Dream” speech in front of the august Lincoln Memorial. Look out and picture the sea of people—about 250,000— gathered at this March on Washington on August 28, 1963, in a peaceful protest for jobs and freedom. See these sights and more:  Stops on this half-day guided tour include: The Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, and the final stop (with reserved tickets) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Along the way, pass by Howard University and Mary McLeod Council House. Throughout the tour, your guide will share history and stories that celebrate the cultural contributions and civil rights milestones of African Americans in the United States.

At the Lincoln Memorial, learn about Dr. Robert Moton’s (censored) dedication speech at its opening in 1922. Hear stories about the famous 1939 Marion Anderson Concert. Learn about the March on Washington and MLK’s role. At the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, learn about how the Memorial was built, the fourteen quotes and statements featured on the Inscription Wall, the Mountain of Despair, and the Stone of Hope. Next, at the U.S. Capitol, stand where Obama took the oath of office, learn about how slaves from Jamestown helped build the Capitol and the White House, and learn how key Supreme Court decisions affected African American rights. Next, visit the African American Civil War Memorial & Museum. Here you will find out more about the 209,000 African American Civil War veterans and see a memorial, plaques, and the “Spirit of Freedom” statue dedicated to them in 1998. Along the tour, pass by the U Street neighborhood, once home to civil rights activist Frederick Douglass. Drive past the renowned Howard University, established in 1867. Prominent graduates include Thurgood Marshall, Elijah Cummings, Taraji Henson, and Toni Morrison. Go by the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, purchased by her in 1943 and featuring a design inspired by the second French Empire. At the close of our tour, enjoy same-day reserved tickets to explore on your own at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which closes at 5:30.

HOLIDAYS SPARKLING MEMORIES: A MAGICAL WALK

Sparkling Memories: A Magical Walk by D.C.’s Holiday Lights and Landmarks

Are you lucky enough to be in the District of Columbia during the holiday season? Then get in the spirit of the season with a guided walking tour that sparkles. Your trained guide will bring you past the most dazzling Christmas trees, the world’s largest Menorah, illuminated landmarks, and festive street decorations—ending with a visit to the world-renowned GLOW Light Art Exhibition in quaint Georgetown. Our first sight is the Capitol Tree, or “People’s Tree” on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building. This enormous tree, typically up to seventy-five feet tall, is against the striking backdrop of the illuminated U.S. Capitol building. Citizens often refer to this as the “People’s Tree” because citizens across the nation play a key role in making this Christmas tree possible by raising funds and helping to decorate it. The U.S. Forest service selects the tree from one of the country’s national forests, transported across the country, and decorated with ornaments made by children selected from a particular state each year. Each year since 1964, the lighting of this tree has marked the start of the holiday season. Our next twinkling tree—the National Christmas Tree—is inside the White House Ellipse, in front of the White House. The tradition of lighting the National Tree began in 1923 with President Calvin Coolidge. The Pathway of Peace, built in 1954, features fifty-six smaller trees radiating from the National Tree. Each state, territory, and the District of Columbia makes handmade ornaments to decorate their own tree. The Ellipse also has a 20-foot Menorah and life-size Nativity. Next, as we travel to Georgetown, you have an opportunity to get great shots of the National Mall, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol building as well as a peek at Georgetown’s holiday decor. We will end our trip at Georgetown’s world-renowned GLOW Light Art Exhibition. See how the featured national and international outdoor exhibitions use light in daring new ways. You will surely end the night with a bright impression of D.C.’s holiday spirit!

  • Experience the best of DC during the holidays with a live tour guide
  • Wonder at the 65 foot tall People’s tree outside the Capitol Building
  • Walk around the National Christmas tree and Pageant of Peace outside the White House
  • See breathtaking illuminated views of the National Mall

AN AMISH EXPERIENCE

The Heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country: Tour “Amish Village” in Lancaster

Travel back in time to be with the Amish, a German religious group who first settled in Pennsylvania Dutch country in the 1720s. Today, most Amish still live by traditional rules established centuries ago—many Amish people do not even use typical electricity from the grid (they do use a few modern workarounds such as batteries though!) At the Amish Village in Lancaster, PA you can see first-hand how a traditional Amish farm and home operate. Take a tour of this 12-acre property, which features a farmhouse, barn, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop, all originally built in 1840. The people who work at this family-run business are all either currently or formerly Amish. These experts can share facts about the history, lifestyle, and culture of the Amish. The best part—you will eat lunch onsite with and prepared by an Amish family. Enjoy!

See the District Light Up: Night Tour of Washington, D.C. Monuments (with transportation)

Let Washington, D.C. enchant you at night! After dusk, it turns into a City of Light step aside, Paris right before your eyes. On this guided night-time tour, see more than 100 of D.C.’s illuminated monuments and landmarks. Impressive by day, these sights are almost magical at night, including: the world-recognized U.S. Capitol Building, the iconic White House, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Washington Monument, designed to commemorate the beloved “Father of our Nation” and first U.S. President. This towering obelisk, made of marble, granite, and bluestone, stands 555 feet tall! It is truly mesmerizing to see it lit up at night. Streetcar stops also include the FDR Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. Here, the colossal statue of Lincoln, the 16th U.S. President, will captive you. Through the awe-inspiring statue, featured against a building inspired by the Greek Parthenon, Lincoln still commands respect! Throughout the tour, your guide will share facts about Washington DC’s leading role in history, behind-the-scenes stories of the city’s powerful residents, and, on a lighter note, will even let you in on the city’s alleged hauntings!

LGBTQ Tour: A Proud Walk through the Castro Neighborhood

Explore the LGBTQ history of the Castro neighborhood on foot. Whatever your sexual orientation, you are sure to have fun! Your local guide will stroll with you through this fascinating neighborhood, pointing out local landmarks and historical sites. You will learn about the important role this area played as an epicenter of gay rights:  from the election of Harvey Milk to City Supervisor as the first openly gay man in the state of California to the LGBT activism that followed in the 1980s and its ongoing mission. Pass by Harvey Milk’s former residence and the Harvey Milk Plaza. Take pictures at the Rainbow Honor Walk Project, which honors LGBT pioneers. Pink Triangle Memorial Park is a tribute to the LGBT people killed during Hitler’s Nazi regime. You will also recall the AIDS pandemic in the 80s and learn about the first gay pride parade in 1970, which has become an institution in San Francisco. (It’s a must-attend if you are in town in late June). You will gain a greater appreciation of the country’s lack of civil rights protections for this diverse and widespread community. Explore the many historical events and sites that have shaped the Castro community as well as culture worldwide. Don’t miss the Castro theater, with its Spanish baroque architecture. Given all this history, is it surprising that San Francisco was the first city to achieve the milestone of same-sex marriage? Leave with a deeper understanding and insight after your visit to San Francisco and the Castro neighborhood.
